There have been plenty of blonde trends over the years that I’ve wanted to try (hello, brioche blonde), but the “expensive blonde” colour currently hitting it big for spring 2022 is possibly my favourite yet. Celebs like Zendaya, Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney and Vogue Williams have all recently had the colour done for themselves, and I’m sold by how glossy they look.
I’m already a blonde, but I just haven't found that perfect shade, so when I headed to Live True salon in London Soho to see designer colourist Sofia for an “expensive” transformation, I was keen to get her hot take on what makes this colour so special and universally flattering. “An expensive blonde can be described as a warm shade of blonde that features fewer shadows, and a soft contrast between warm shades as opposed to just one set colour,” explains Sofia.
“It can look a little like a balayage with darker roots and lighter ends, but there is more of a softness and creaminess to it.” Read More Related Articles Copper hair is having a big moment – how to nail it like Kendall Jenner and Euphoria stars “I prefer to freehand paint areas of lightness, as foils provide too much of a contrasting colour against the base. We then always finish with a toner, as it seals the cuticle and also gives a blurring effect across the base and lightened sections,” she adds. The key to this colour is to keep the hair looking creamy and slightly warm in tone, rather than an ashy shade.
“People got a bit tired of the white and ashy blondes, so beige is the go-to now for summer,” Sofia says. In terms of who can have this colour done, mid brunettes can expect a darker but still creamy result from this trend, although Sofia notes it might take two or three sessions to get to a base

Charlotte Dawson switches between brunette and blonde hair so seamlessly that her grid looks like one blended balayage. Now, she’s debuting a fresh colour for the summer months – an expensive, warm blonde. The 29 year old is wearing a version of moneypiece accents, which saw celebs in 2021 favour bright front sections of blonde, but Charlotte makes the look more current by taking those light pieces further back and away from her face. She’s also opted for a honey tone of blonde, which is smart considering her natural colour is also warm in tone, so she won’t be fighting to stay ashy.
