As a beauty editor, there’s one tweakment that I get asked about more than any other: Botox. Once largely associated with celebrities’ “secret help” – or, if done badly, their frozen faces – the taboo around Botox injections is lifting. It’s the second most Googled tweakment (after lip fillers), and done well and it can be a quick and barely-perceptible way to just look a little fresher. The basic facts: Botox (botulinum toxin) works by relaxing muscles, binding to where the nerve meets the muscle and blocking the message to move.
It’s most commonly applied to the forehead, frown lines and around the eyes, but Botox can also be used to lift a nose tip, relax a gummy smile, stop a chin dimpling, decrease jaw grinding and treat lip lines. It can be used on areas on the body, too, to stop excessive sweating. Results kick in anywhere between two days and two weeks, and last around 3-5 months.
It’s illegal to administer it to anyone under the age of 18 but other than that there’s no right time to lose your Botox virginity, and it can be used to both prevent and repair wrinkles. “I favour the preventative approach,” says aesthetic doctor Sophie Shotter, “starting when you can see where your lines are going to be but they’re not significantly there yet.” This resonated with me. Now well into my 30s, I didn’t have deep crow’s feet or frown lines, but recently I had noticed that the lines on my forehead were lingering long after my brows had dropped back down making me, I believed, look tired.
