Hurricane Idalia has been upgraded to a major Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds near 120 mph. At 11 p.m. PT, Idalia sat about 100 miles south of the Florida coast. It is expected to make landfall somewhere in the Big Bend region of the state with a storm surge between 12 and 16 feet.
According to the latest National Weather Service forecast, “significant strengthening seems likely up to landfall. The new official intensity forecast calls for Idalia to reach category 4 strength at landfall.” Cat. 4 storms have maximum sustained winds from 130-156 mph.
Per the NWS, “Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles.”
NWS Tallahassee offered some local context for what the forecast called a potential catastrophic storm surge.
“Hurricane #Idalia will likely be an unprecedented event for many locations in the Florida Big Bend. Looking back through recorded history, NO major hurricanes have ever moved through the Apalachee Bay. When you try to compare this storm to others, DON’T. No one has seen this.”
The storm will remain potent moving inland. It is likely to still be a hurricane while moving across southern Georgia and, according to the NWS, possibly even when it reaches the coast of Georgia or southern South Carolina late Wednesday.

Sacramento Bee, San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Tom Garza issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Chino Valley Unified School District from enforcing the policy, which is one of six school districts in the state to have adopted policies requiring parental notification when a student doesn’t conform to gender norms or stereotypes. The Chino Valley policy was challenged by Attorney General Rob Bonta, who argued that the policy violates the privacy rights of LGBTQ students, and endangers the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of transgender and gender-nonconforming students. The Orange Unified School District was the most recent to adopt a policy similar to Chino Valley’s — coming after Bonta’s lawsuit was filed — with school boards in Murietta, Temecula, the Anderson Union High School District in Shasta County, in the northern part of the state, and the Rocklin School District, northeast of Sacramento. The policies are increasingly being adopted in conservative enclaves throughout the state as part of a larger societal backlash against transgender visibility — which has been encouraged by conservative influencers and Republican Party leaders.A group of activists recently filed a ballot initiative — one of three targeting transgender youth visibility — that would impose similar parental notification policies on districts throughout the state. The Alaska State Board of Education recently approved a proposed regulation barring transgender girls from competing on female-designated high school sports teams for any districts that are part of the Alaska School Activities Association.

SPOILER ALERTS ON JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL FINALE: Timothy Olyphant’s return to the role of US Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval completed its seven-episode limited series run tonight on FX. Surviving the Oklahoma Wildman Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), Givens seemed headed to a proper retirement, hanging up his badge and gun for a quiet life in Miami. Just when he was finally out — a pensioner content to refurbish a Florida shack and dote on the daughter he neglected for years — with the promise of a relationship with lawyer Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis)…up pops Boyd Crowder, the charming silver-tongued psychopath played by Walton Goggins. Crowder, who vexed Raylan on and off throughout the original series creation from the Elmore Leonard novels, has escaped with the help of a girlfriend posing as a guard supposed to escort him to another prison that will help a physical malady. And just like that, Givens is faced with the prospect of returning once more before Crowder makes it across the border of Mexico with his accomplice. In the interview that follows this recap, Michael Dinner — who hatched the series revival with David Andron and directed three episodes including tonight’s finale — acknowledges there is every possibility that Givens could be back for one more showdown. The episode closes with Givens not answering the cell phone call to focus on his daughter. For the moment, anyway.
