Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is openly dreaming about a baseball-broadcast future that doesn’t include regional cable TV deals – and that would mean no more blackouts, among other improvements for fans, he said.Manfred’s musings came amid ongoing bankruptcy speculation for Diamond Sports Group, which missed a $140 million interest payment in January. He said if Diamond can’t pay the 14 Major League Baseball teams it has broadcast deals with, baseball is ready with a Plan B that he hopes could lead to a better deal for fans overall.“We’ve been really clear that if Diamond doesn’t pay under every single one of the broadcast agreements, that creates a termination right, and our clubs will proceed to terminate those contracts,” Manfred said.Then he went straight to outlining what a post-cable baseball world would look like: “In the event that MLB stepped in, what we would do is we would produce the games, we would make use of our asset with the MLB Network to do that, we would go directly to distributors, Comcast, Charter, the big distributors, and make an agreement to have those games distributed on cable networks.”That transformation would give them a chance to finally get rid of those pesky local digital blackouts.“We would also be seeking flexibility on the digital side so that, when you look at MLB.TV, you could buy your out-of-market package like you always had but have the option to buy up into in-market games, something the fan has never had before, which I see as a huge improvement for fans,” Manfred said.Though a Diamond Sports bankruptcy would create minimal fan disruption, its impact on MLB’s bottom line and revenue could be major.

The council has swooped on hundreds of seagull nests in a bid to curb the chaos caused by the birds across Dumfries and Galloway this year.
A contractor was brought in and has spent months removing 275 nests and 450 eggs from council buildings – after getting special permission to do so by NatureScot.
The majority of nests and eggs were recovered in Dumfries after 26 separate removal licences were granted by the natural heritage body, while others were picked up in Stranraer, Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright, and Sanquhar.
Council buildings, including primary schools and community centres, have also been ‘gull-proofed’ by fitting roof spikes, wires or nets to prevent seagulls landing and nesting.
These locations include: Dumfries ARC, Loreburn Hall, Loreburn Primary, Georgetown Primary, Calside Primary, Newington Primary, Northwest Resource Centre, and The Waird in Sanquhar. Several lampposts in Castle Douglas, Dumfries, and Stranraer have also been gull-proofed.
This comes after the council committed to spending £83,500 on various methods of tackling the problem of an increasing population of seagulls swooping on people and causing distress to everyone from children and dogs to elderly tourists.
An update on the how the gulls project is progressing will be provided at the council’s communities committee on Thursday, February 2.
A report produced by Sandra Harkness, the council’s community protection manager, explained that the majority of the money allocated has been spent on the tackling the nuisance gulls issue.
She detailed how just over £67,000 had been spent on: 600 gull proof sacks – £1.500; gull proof bins – £42,000, fitting roof spikes and nets on council property – £9,148, egg and nest removal from council properties –
