How Normal People ‘breaks taboo’ with realistic love scenes

You’d need the self-control of a Buddha to not binge-watch BBC series Normal People in a couple of sittings. The TV show, based on Sally Rooney’s book of the same name, has shattered records by racking up sixteen million iPlayer requests in its first week alone.

If anyone is having a moment right now, it’s Daisy Edgar-Jones. As the fearless female lead in the BBC’s pitch perfect adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel, Normal People, the 21 year-old Londoner is suddenly the name on everyone’s lips.

After airing earlier this week on RTE, the limited series Normal People received backlash from older viewers during a Liveline debate over some of its more explicit scenes. 

It's likely there was never going to be a perfect adaptation of Normal People, Sally Rooney's excellent best-selling novel detailing the complicated but tender relationship between two Irish teens, but Hulu's attempt, which is now streaming, is a valiant effort.
