Music legend Lionel Richie is a doting father to his three kids, Nicole Richie, Miles Brockman Richie and Sofia Richie. However, he shares a very special bond with his oldest daughter Nicole, who he adopted when she was just nine years old with his then-wife Brenda Harvey. According to Lionel, 73, Nicole changed his life.
Her biological parents were friends of Richie's who were struggling financially. "Nicole was actually a godsend. She was a little girl who needed a shot," he said in an interview with People.
"She was used to people coming and going. She looked at me and I'd say, 'I'm not going anywhere.'" In 1983, Lionel Richie attended a Prince concert in Los Angeles where he first saw Nicole, who was only two years old at the time. She was playing the tambourine on stage with Prince, which caught Lionel's attention.
He later discovered that she was the daughter of musician Peter Escovedo and Karen Moss, who worked for Peter’s sister, singer Sheila Escovedo, better known as Sheila E. After playing with Nicole briefly, Lionel didn't think about her again until a few weeks later when he saw her again and learned about the difficulties her parents were having.They couldn't take her on tour because she was too young, and they were struggling with their relationship. Lionel knew Sheila and the family, so he suggested that they keep Nicole with him and Brenda.They started out as legal guardians, and after two years, they became her adoptive parents as Nicole’s biological family situation continued to deteriorate.
