Mamma Mia’s Lily James has revealed what it was like to star as nineties icon Pamela Anderson in the new series Pam & Tommy, calling the extreme transformation a “liberating” process. Speaking to Porter magazine, Lily explained that it was like anything she had ever done before. “And then, of course, there was the physical transformation.
Slowly, our incredible team found a balance where I resembled Pamela but also felt like I could act through it. “I’ve never worked so hard. I read the books [Anderson] has written, I read her poetry, I can parrot along to all her interviews,” she said.
Recalling how she would sit in the makeup chair at 3.30am while filming as specialists put on her chest plate, fake tan and wig for four hours, the physical transformation was a gruelling process. “I've never done anything where I look very different from myself before. And I'd really like to continue in this vein, because I felt there was something very freeing and liberating in it.
“There was a bravery that came from that. A courage that came from… disappearing,” the 32 year old explained. And given that viewers are more used to seeing Lily in roles in Downton Abbey and Cinderella, her skinny 90s eyebrows and eyeliner-coated glare meant that fans were quick to take to social media to show their disbelief of the transformation.
“The make up and hair team that turned lily james into Pamela deserve ALLLLLLLLLLL the awards!,” one Twitter user wrote. “Give the makeup artist an emmy like NOW! lily james is so unrecognizable and looking so much like pamela,” another commented. But despite the long hours preparing for the role, Lily revealed that she was sad to let go of her character when filming came to an end.
