patten, the London-based producer and artist born Damien Roach, has used generative AI in his practice for years, but in late 2022 he came across something new. Riffusion is a website that uses Stable Diffusion, a neural network model that traditionally generates images from text prompts by trawling the internet for source material.
Riffusion cleverly hijacks this by harnessing text prompts to create a spectrogram, a visual representation of a sound. Users type in whatever they like (“Puff Daddy polka,” perhaps? Or maybe “Interstellar soundtrack baile funk 2023?”) and save the resulting clip to their computer.
After stumbling across the tool, patten spent a sleepless 36 hours generating a vast library of sounds with Riffusion, the raw material that he would spend the next several weeks pouring over and assembling into his new album Mirage FM. Riffusion’s outputs helped patten to expand his existing work with AI.
His creative agency 555-5555 has created the visuals for the most recent Caribou tour and worked with a roster of musicians that includes Jayda G and Nathan Fake. Over the phone from London, patten tells me how big questions rather than novelty drew him to use generative AI for visual work.
“[I want] to try and use these tools as a way to interrogate the way that we engage with images [and] how we actually engage with each other and the world and society… It's easy to forget how powerful images are in… forging out paths for what the future might look like.” For patten, Riffusion represented a new and novel dimension of AI’s approach to creating sound. Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Steve McQueen looks stressed out. He’s a few weeks into post-production on “Blitz,” his World War II drama for Apple TV+, while starting promotion on his other, long-gestating wartime project, the documentary “Occupied City.” “It’s definitely pleasurable, but this is work,” declares McQueen with the wariness of a filmmaker who’s just been plucked out of the edit suite. “Hard work is always hard work. You can’t avoid it.” The British director, who was Oscar-nominated for “12 Years a Slave,” didn’t set out to make back-to-back movies about the war, but “you plant seeds, and some come to fruition and others don’t,” he explains. “These two happened to blossom fairly close to each other.”

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International At Sunday night’s BAFTA TV Awards in London, the most popular couple in the room won’t actually be British. Given the U.K. reception to Australian series “Colin From Accounts” — which was acquired by the BBC in one of its smartest deals in years — that honor will likely go to Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, the real-life partners who created and star in the half-hour rom-com. The couple will be presenting a BAFTA during the ceremony, and afterwards, they’re available for selfies. “If we land in the U.K. and people recognize us on the street, that’ll be massive, because it’s never happened to me,” says Dyer. “I’ve lived in L.A. for five years, and I’m on a network television show, and not a single person has gone, ‘Are you from “American Auto?”’ Not one. So I’m pumped. I want to take some pictures with some people.”

coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's memory were felt throughout, with several nods made to both late royals. When it came to Elizabeth, who died in September, there were several nods made by her son and his second wife, largely in the outfits they wore during Saturday's ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London, England. When it came to the king, his Stole Royal was inspired by one worn by his mother during her coronation in 1953 and featured a series of roundels that included the four emblems of the United Kingdom. Camilla's outfit featured several more notable nods to Elizabeth, with the new queen wearing her late mother-in-law's historic «coronation necklace.» First commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1853, it was also worn by Elizabeth during her crowning ceremony in 1953. Additionally, Camilla's «Robe of State,» which was worn upon her arrival at Westminster Abbey, was originally made for Elizabeth in 1953. Her «Robe of Estate,» meanwhile, was embroidered with 24 plants, including the Lily of the Valley, which was the late queen's favorite flower. During the ceremony, Camilla was crowned with Queen Mary's Crown, which was made for the 1911 coronation of Queen Mary, the consort of King George V.
