DJ Cassidy on spinning for Beyonce and JLo: ‘Everyone has their songs’

DJ Cassidy — already underage at 18, but looking “like I was 8” — got his big break on one slow, rainy night at the club Lotus in NYC’s Meatpacking District. That was back when there was more beef than beats in the neighborhood’s nascent nightlife days, and, that night, there was a certain hip-hop mogul — Sean “Puffy” Combs — in the house as Cassidy was filling the largely empty space with the soulful sounds of Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Luther Vandross.“And so Puffy goes to the floor and essentially dances by himself for two hours,” the now 42-year-old DJ — who will headline Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall with his “Pass the Mic Live!” concert on Friday — told The Post.“At 5 in the morning on the way out, he walks by the DJ booth … and he wrote down his name and number on a napkin and said, ‘Call me tomorrow.’ ” And when he talked on the phone to Combs the next day, Cassidy Podell got “the greatest compliment I’ve ever received.”“He goes, ‘How do you know how to play all those records like that?’ And I said, ‘Like what?’ And he goes, ‘Like you lived it.’ ”A white, Jewish kid from the Upper East Side, Cassidy was too young to have heard many of the black classics he was spinning when they were first released. But with his signature mix of old-school R&B and hip-hop, DJ Cassidy would go on to become spinner to the stars — from Puffy and Jay-Z to Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez — as well as rock the White House at not one but two presidential inaugurations for Barack Obama. Now a star in his own right, he looks every bit the part in a custom-made pink suit ahead of his “Pass the Mic Live!” show on Friday at Radio City.

Dead & Company plays their final show as a band in San Francisco at Deadhead-packed Oracle Park

long strange trip made its final stop.Deadheads from all corners of the world flocked to San Francisco’s Oracle Park Sunday night to see iconic jam band the Grateful Dead’s successor, Dead & Company, play the last show of their ‘Final Tour.’Two of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart — along with singer-songwriter John Mayer, ex-Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and newly added drummer Jay Lane (who replaced one of the band’s original drummers, Bill Kreutzmann, for the final tour) — thrilled fans in the town where the original Dead was formed in 1965.Kicking off the three nights of their final tour on Friday, over 40,000 fans packed into the ballpark each night, with all three shows sold out. Deadheads were treated to some of the band’s more popular but cherished tunes, like “Bertha” and “Althea” during their first set, and after the intermission, heard Mayer slide on the guitar and bop around on stage to the likes of “Help on the Way” and “Cumberland Blues.”The band’s encore and final performance ever ended with “Truckin’,” “Brokedown Palace” and final send-off “Not Fade Away” — accompanied by a dazzling drone performance above the stadium — before Dead & Company gave their last bow to the audience as a band. For Deadheads tuning in via live stream through Nug.net — a live concert streaming service that had the exclusive rights to broadcast the show — the experience was less than ideal, with many missing segments of the show due to login issues or not being able to access their accounts in altogether for the final hurrah.‘The Final Tour’ started in Los Angeles on May 19, spanning to major US cities like New York and Chicago.Showing love from the Big

“The Bear” Season 2 Review: Second Helpings

The Bear‘s second season places us in a frigid Chicago winter, where our beloved, stressed chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and his crew are hard at work turning their now-shuttered sandwich joint “The Beef” into “The Bear,” an upscale dining destination. The second season of Hulu’s surprise hit from Christopher Storer (Eighth Grade, Ramy) proves that without change, even the most timeless meals can go off.

Matty Matheson on Transitioning From Real-Life Chef to ‘The Bear’ Star: ‘Acting Scares the S— Out of Me’

Sophia Scorziello editor Being a television personality is a lot different than playing a television character. For someone like cooking TV personality Matty Matheson, the latter can be terrifying. “Acting scares the shit out of me,” said Matheson, actor and executive producer on FX’s acclaimed restaurant dramedy series “The Bear.” On the show, Matheson plays Neil Fak, better known simply as Fak, the childhood friend of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and Carmy’s cousin Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Fak is sensitive and sweet and sometimes spacey, but does his best in both seasons to keep first the Beef and then the Bear running as a handyman and server.

Every Single Knife Featured in ‘The Bear’ Season 2, And Where to Buy Them

Anna Tingley If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission. In “The Bear,” whose second season returned to Hulu last week, no prop is more significant than each chef’s respective knife. For a series known for showcasing the very real highs and exceptionally difficult lows inside the restaurant industry, getting the tool that every chef needs just right was imperative. Take Carmy’s $2,000-plus Japanese steel knife, for example, that subtly hints for the first time at the tortured chef’s history working in fine dining restaurants, which he so bashfully tries to hide. “We wanted him to have one thing that wasn’t pedestrian because he had already gone to New York, he had already gotten that James Beard Award,” the show’s prop master Laura Roeper tells Variety. “It’s from the Japanese Knives of Beverly Hills. They’re super famous, people know them.”

Rolling Stones seek dismissal of song-theft lawsuit on jurisdiction grounds

The Rolling Stones have filed a motion to dismiss the song-theft lawsuit that was launched against them earlier this year. Said motion mainly raises jurisdiction issues with the lawsuit, which was filed by a Spanish musician against a British band with the courts in Louisiana.Sergio Garcia Fernandez claims that the Stones’ 2020 track ‘Living In A Ghost Town’ rips off two songs he wrote in the 2000s, ‘So Sorry’ and ‘Seed Of God’.His lawsuit claims that the Stones track lifted “vocal melodies, the chord progressions, the drum beat patterns, the harmonica parts, the electric bass line parts, the tempos, and other key signatures” from ‘So Sorry’ and the “harmonic and chord progression and melody” from ‘Seed Of God’.As for how Mick Jagger and Keith Richards might have heard Fernandez’s music before writing ‘Living In A Ghost Town’, the Spanish musician alleged that he had previously sent a demo CD to “an immediate family member” of Jagger.According to Digital Music News, legal reps for the Stones filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit last month.

From Taylor Swift to Pearl Jam: ‘The Bear’ Producers on How They Crafted Season 2’s Sizzling Soundtrack

Emily Longeretta Just as it did in its first season, “The Bear” Season 2 created a powerful soundtrack, thanks to executive producers Josh Senior and Christopher Storer, who also oversee the series’ music. From Otis Redding and Pearl Jam, to R.E.M. and Taylor Swift, the duo were able to tell a story of itself through the needle drops — something that is just as important to them as the writing itself. When the writers room began, the group made a playlist and started sharing ideas with others on the team and even some of the actors, with Senior noting that Ayo Edebiri “is super helpful” in the entire process. “It’s the most fun thing we get to do on the show, in my opinion. It’s a blast,” says Senior. “Sometimes we take all the songs out and see if we miss them. Other times, we use the songs to syncopate the scenes and cut them really fast. It’s an integral part of the process. We don’t score the show after it’s cut.”
