Henry Winkler on Bill Hader’s ‘Barry’ rule: ‘No a–holes allowed’

HBO Max is expanding its kids and family programming slate with B-Loved, a ghostly romance two-part special event starring Peyton List (Cobra Kai), along with three live-action acquisitions, including all three seasons of Hank Zipzer, based on the book written by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver, inspired by Winkler’s life.

It’s lovely to see former “Happy Days” star and Emmy-winner Henry Winkler in a full-blown renaissance period, just thriving as an outstanding comedic character actor on shows like “Arrested Development” and Bill Hader‘s hit HBO hitman comedy “Barry.” Winkler won the Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series at the 70th Emmy Awards for his work on “Barry,” and it’s clear that HBO wants to keep staying in the Winkler business as they’re looking to reunite for a new true-crime series at the prestigious television studio.

EXCLUSIVE: Even as their hit Emmy-winning comedy Barry makes its long awaited return, HBO is looking to stay in business with its star Henry Winkler as sources tell Deadline that HBO is developing the new limited series King Rex with Henry Winkler attached to star and his son, Max, directing the pilot. It would mark the first time the father-son duo have worked together in the business and both Winklers are also exec producing. Joining them as exec producers are Malcolm Spellman and Nichelle Tramble Spellman who will exec produce through their The 51 banner along with Eli Dansky (the Spellman’s have a first look deal with HBO). Scott Brown and Megan Creydt of Texas Monthly (who also has first look deal with HBO) will also exec produce with Trey Selman writing the pilot and co-exec producing.

“Barry,” which is currently airing, but Meyers – who was head writer at “SNL” during Hader’s tenure – took a moment during the interview to break some tough news to his former colleague.“You were kind of known as the impression guy at ‘SNL’, but you obviously have ‘Barry’ and other things right now on your plate, and I feel like there’s been a vacancy. And I feel like I’m kind of the impression guy now,” Meyers said jokingly to Hader on the show.“Oh really?” Hader replied, then the “Barry” co-creator asked Meyers to show him some of his impressions, which launched a non-stop giggle fest between the two.Meyers has, in truth, been showcasing some really terrific impressions on “Late Night” over the last few years, but for Hader’s benefit he kept his example impressions short.

Robert Bailey Jr. (Emergence) has been cast as a series regular in ABC’s comedy pilot The Son in Law, starring Chris Sullivan. In addition to Sullivan, he joins previously cast series regulars Reema Sampat, Meera Simhan, Anupam Kher and Evangeline Young.
