‘The Royal Hotel’ Review: Bad Times With the Barflies in Kitty Green’s Genre Take on Toxic Male Behavior

Amy Nicholson “The Royal Hotel,” the setting of Kitty Green’s ulcer-inducing thriller, is a sun-baked bar in a rural Australian mining town surrounded by terrain so monotone that Canadian backpackers Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) can’t keep their eyes open on the way in. The two young women arrive at their barmaid jobs with a sense palpable disorientation. They’ve quite literally woken up in Oz, and they don’t know the people, the customs, the nicknames for the local ales, or the way out.

Kanye West wanted to turn his Malibu home into a ‘bomb shelter’

Kanye West reportedly wanted to transform his home in Malibu, California into a ‘bomb shelter’.The news comes from a new lawsuit filed by Tony Saxon, who, as Sky News reports, claims he is owed $1million (£800,000) in unpaid wages and loss of earnings after working as a project manager, full-time security and live-in caretaker at West’s house in Malibu.Speaking to NBC – who reviewed and confirmed the contents of the lawsuit – Saxon said of the proposed renovations to the house: “We were going to be gutting all of that out and sort of building him a Bat Cave” to “hide from the Clintons in and the Kardashians in,” adding that he wanted to turn the house into a “bomb shelter from the 1910s”.He added that while he initially thought it to be an “art project”, he realised eventually that “no, he wants to live in here”.Elsewhere, Saxon said that Kanye “wanted no electricity. He only wanted plants. He only wanted candles.

‘Gonzo Girl’ Helmer Patricia Arquette Leads Wave of Actors Turned First-Time Directors

Gregg Goldstein Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress Patricia Arquette was cast in her latest, most challenging role by an unlikely group: her colleagues. “For many years, the crews I worked with were always saying, ‘You should direct,’” Arquette says of helming her first feature, the Toronto world premiere “Gonzo Girl.” “Or actors in a scene would say, ‘Was that good? Should I ask for another take? Do you think there’s anything I should try?’ You get to a point where you’ve learned a lot about the nuts and bolts of how filmmaking works, and a lot of directors just aren’t as familiar with the process of acting as an actor is.” The star, who’ll be feted with TIFF’s Share Her Journey Groundbreaker Award on Sept.

How ‘Shaun of the Dead’ Inspired Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk’s Directorial Debut ‘Hell of a Summer’

McKinley Franklin editor Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk were tired of the garbled Gen Z stereotypes plastered about modern Hollywood — so, they created their own narrative in “Hell of a Summer.” “Our number one conversation was how annoying it is to see new teen movies and how badly our age group is represented,” says Wolfhard. “And we’re like, ‘Why don’t we just do it?’” And so they did. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept.

‘Day Of The Fight’ Review: Jack Huston Packs An Emotional Punch With His Directing Debut – Venice Film Festival

There’s been a lot of jealous talk about nepotism in the film world lately, but who would really want to come into the movie world as a, what, fourth-generation Huston? There are likely swords already being sharpened for Jack Huston, the handsome, charming, 40-year-old nephew of Anjelica, grandson of Jack and great-grandson of Walter. But his directing debut, Day of the Fight, which premiered this week in the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons Extra section, is certainly worthy of the family name. It’s a little earnest, sometimes a bit too style-conscious, and Huston is inclined to put performance before story every time. But the emotional input really earns its payoff in a confident, imaginatively mounted calling card.

‘The Theory Of Everything’ Review: A Weirdly Elusive Dive Into The Multiverse – Venice Film Festival

Thanks to science fiction, we all have a basic grip on the theory of the multiverse: the idea that there are innumerable parallel worlds in which the chances and choices of the past – the roads not taken, whether by ourselves or the dinosaurs – have split off into alternative stories, endlessly bifurcating into other pasts, other futures that must be peopled, most provocatively, with other versions of ourselves. It is an idea that has proved rich pickings for comic-book adventures, where peril can come from any available universe and there is always a chance of confronting a doppelganger, but German director Timm Kröger has returned to the theory – which dates back to the 1950s – to explore how mysterious, sinister and terrifyingly vast a proposal it really is. This is a theory of everything where everything – that familiar word – is infinite. Where nothing, in fact, is ever going to be “everything.”
