Health chiefs are being urged to reopen the minor injuries unit at Altrincham Hospital as soon as possible to allay "local suspicion and rumour" that it may never happen. The facility closed in November 2021 because of a shortage of emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs) and services there have been suspended ever since.
Councillor Mike Whetton, chair of Trafford's Health Scrutiny Committee, insisted on hearing a report on the latest situation at a meeting last night. A letter to the committee from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, indicated that the earliest the unit could reopen would be August.
Coun Whetton said: "I was keen to put this on the agenda because of local concern. I know the NHS would prefer it to be dealt with later in the year, but I wanted to kick it off at this meeting."

The committee was assured by the trust's director of strategy John Wareing that they were "seeking to reopen the unit as soon as possible" following the workforce pressures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Coun Whetton said that the assurance showed that bringing the issue to the committee "was the right thing to do".
He went on: "There is a nervousness among the public. Altrincham is several miles from other locations that are options for someone who is in need of help."
Since the unit closed the majority of minor injuries, such as fractures, have been dealt with at Wythenshawe Hospital, on the border of Trafford. Coun Whetton said: "I have experience at Wythenshawe where someone went in with a minor injury and there was a member of staff shouting 'a nine-hour wait for treatment'.
