Many of the sport's all-time greats, including Jake LaMotta, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, have trained at the historic Gleason's Gym in New York.
But Roy Richardson, a plumber from Ancoats and legend of the Manchester amateur boxing scene, wasn't daunted.
His granddaughter Stacey Copeland, then aged 10, was working a heavy bag, and her presence in the male-dominated environment had ruffled a few feathers.
