Hank Azaria wants to 'try to make up' for portrayal of Apu on 'The Simpsons'

MUMBAI – Indian-American rapper and singer-songwriter Raja Kumari has signed to Mass Appeal India, the label announced Monday (March 9). Kumari, aka Svetha Rao, is one of India's biggest hip-hop acts and among the few female English-speaking artists to have made a mark in the genre here.The California native follows rapper and frequent collaborator Divine to Mass Appeal India, a partnership between Nas-owned U.S.-based entertainment company Mass Appeal and Universal Music India.

After years of saying he was done, actor Hank Azaria definitively confirmed to the New York Times that he will no longer voice Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the character on The Simpsons he has voiced since the show started in 1989. In recent years, Apu has become a subject of controversy, with the 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu making the case that the convenience store-owning, stereotypically accented immigrant character is a racist depiction of Indian people created by white people.

Universal Music India has promoted Vinit Thakkar from senior VP to the newly created position of COO, India and South Asia. Thakkar was instrumental in the launch of the VYRL Originals label, alongside Bollywood filmmaker Mohit Suri.
