Hunter Ingram Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “See You on the Other Side,” the Season 1 finale of “Surface,” now streaming on Apple TV+. What began with a leap ended with a cliffhanger as Apple TV+’s “Surface” closed out its first season with some good old-fashioned revenge and an enticing tease of the future. After a season spent piecing together her lost memories after an apparent attempt at suicide by throwing herself off a ship, Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) learned she’d never actually intended to kill herself. It was all a calculated ruse to escape back to her old life as Tess Caldwell, a mysterious woman with a past she’s only remembered in bloody flashes.
After discovering she had stolen money from her husband’s firm, and left herself a go-bag in a storage locker that was packed for a return trip to her native London, Sophie made it look like she jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge in the finale, severing ties with her posh San Francisco life and fulfilling her own plan to chase down her past. In the episode’s closing moments, she arrives back in England without any memory of who she was as Tess, or any idea of who might be waiting for her. Her only lead is a single London address stored in her go-bag’s burner phone for Eliza Huntley (Millie Brady), the blood-soaked woman plaguing her memories. After not-so-subtly tracking her to a cafe, Eliza confronts her shadow with a question ripe with concern — “Tess, I know it’s you. What are you doing here?” The interwoven danger and thrill of diving headfirst into Tess’ past is what excites Mbatha-Raw and creator Veronica West about a potential second season, which Apple has yet to order. “She crossed an ocean 10 years ago to come here and she was

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor Jamie Yuccas’ new Los Angeles assignment at KCAL is likely to make waves among followers of local news. But it’s part of a big national effort by the station’s owner, Paramount Global. Yuccas, a veteran correspondent at CBS News, will be one of the anchors of a new seven-hour morning block of local newscasts on the CBS-owned station. Yuccas, who will continue to serve as a CBS News correspondent, will anchor from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on KCAL each morning, making her one of the faces viewers will likely see as they get ready for their day. Local news spurs deeper connections with viewers, says Wendy McMahon co president of CBS’ news and stations unit, in an interview. “The local news we produce drives impact, and that impact is service to our community, she says. “Ultimately, it has a positive impact on the business.”
The Academy needs to create new revenue streams that do not rely on the Oscars show, but it also needs to bring the Oscars to a position of “power, honorability and importance,” Academy leaders told the organization’s membership in an all-members meeting on Saturday. The meeting, led by new Academy CEO Bill Kramer and new president Janet Yang, took place in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and was available to be attended virtually by members not in Los Angeles. In some ways, the gathering was reminiscent of the all-members meeting held by then-president Hawk Koch and CEO Dawn Hudson in May, 2013, which took place simultaneously in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. At that point, the Academy consisted of about 6,000 members and was predominantly white and male; the #OscarsSoWhite protests had yet to push the organization to become more diverse, while the Academy Museum was in the planning stages. This year’s meeting came at a time when the Academy has expanded to 10,627 members, more than doubling the number of women and people of color and including a very large international contingent.
