Christopher Vourlias If Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony were a validation for Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros., whose $165 million gamble on Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi tentpole “Dune” paid off in the form of six Academy Awards, it was no less a triumph for the Hungarian film industry, which hosted the blockbuster throughout much of production in 2019 and 2020.The trophy haul, which included an Oscar for production design duo Patrice Vermette and Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Sipos, further cemented the status of an industry that last year broke records with $650 million in total production spend.Herb Gaines, Legendary’s head of physical production, says the country ticked all the boxes to host a production on such a massive scale. “We were looking for a production base that could support a film of this magnitude as well as be logistically feasible for access to our desert location needs,” says Gaines, citing the convenience of a hub in the heart of Central Europe once Jordan became the front-runner for “Dune’s” sprawling desert sequences.

At the 94th Academy Awards, Dune‘s Greig Fraser landed his first Oscar for Best Cinematography, joking that he was happy his award was up early in the broadcast, so that he could “get out and get to the bar.”

Hans Zimmer won his second career Oscar tonight, Original Score for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. This was Zimmer’s 12th nomination for Original Score, and second win since The Lion King in 1995. He was previously nominated for Rain Man (1989), The Preacher’s Wife (1997), As Good as It Gets (1998), The Prince of Egypt (1999), The Thin Red Line (1999), Gladiator (2001), Sherlock Holmes (2010), Inception (2011), Interstellar (2015), and Dunkirk (2018).

Joe Walker has won the Oscar for film editing for Dune — taking one of the eight technical categories that were controversially shifted out of the main telecast. Dune was the frontrunner for the win, which is Walker’s first after two previous nominations, for Arrival (in 2017, also directed by Denis Villeneuve) and 12 Years A Slave (2014).

Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos took home statuettes for their work on Dune at the Academy Awards on Sunday. Both Vermette and Sipos are first-time winners, though the former had previously been nominated for his work on the films The Young Victoria and Arrival.
