“She has so many projects in development as a producer, and the Hulu project as an actress,” said Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff told Variety. “And she’s really excited to spread her wings, and we want to support her in that — while she will always be in the fabric of our show.”

“I think that this show has legs,” Krista said. “I think that Ellen is extraordinary, and she’s been an extraordinary center of this show for a really long time. And if her career takes her in another direction, I believe that we’ve got a show here with a lot of amazing characters that our fans love. And this new class of interns is really exciting.”
When asked about what would cause Ellen‘s character Meredith to leave, Krista offered a big hint. “When you’ve got a woman who has a job that she loves, a career that she loves, a man that she loves, what is the thing that might take her out of the main storytelling?” Krista asked rhetorically. “And my answer to that is: her kids. Something happens with her kids that changes the course of her plans for her life. And as a mother, I resonate with that.”
Ellen made her first comments on her reduced role back in September 2022.

Watching the Season 19 premiere felt very familiar in a lot of ways. It almost is like the series is restarting from the beginning. Why did you feel the best path forward for “Grey’s” was nodding to its past? We’ve done a major shift multiple times throughout the seasons.
Kate Aurthur editor SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “Everything Has Changed,” the premiere of Season 19 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which first aired on Oct. 6 on ABC and streams on Hulu starting on Oct. 7. “Grey’s Anatomy” is diving back into its past to begin its future. The Season 19 premiere of ABC’s long-running medical drama kicked off with a slew of brand-new cast members — the class of surgical interns on their first day at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, much like the pilot episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” introduced that cast on March 27, 2005. These freshmen interns, though, are the opposite of the Meredith Greys and Cristina Yangs we met all those years ago. Because the Grey Sloan surgical residency program was shut down last season after a patient’s death, this new group was selected in desperation: They’re the rejects and malcontents who didn’t make it elsewhere. New series regulars Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Alexis Floyd, Midori Francis and Niko Terho play the interns, and their backstories will unfold throughout the season.

A combination of the old, along with the new.

Kate Aurthur editor When the 19th season of “Grey’s Anatomy” premieres on ABC on Oct. 6, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will be front and center in the episode, as she’s been since the series made its debut on March 27, 2005. Meredith is now the chief of surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, and she’s been charged with rebuilding its surgical intern program after it was dismantled last season following a patient’s death. Five of those interns will be new characters this season. Yet as Variety reported over the summer, Pompeo (and Meredith) will soon be taking a step back, and will appear in only eight of this season’s episodes — though all the episodes will still have Meredith’s voiceover at the beginning and end. Along with the development she’s shepherding at her production company Calamity Jane, Pompeo is starring in and executive producing an as-yet untitled limited series at Hulu about a couple who adopt a child they think is an 8-year-old with dwarfism — but then things begin to go awry within their family.

The actress stopped by the ET stages on Tuesday afternoon for an exclusive sit-down interview where she previewed the new season, which also welcomes five new interns into the world of Grey Sloan.«The whole first part of the season is working its way around this story,» Scorsone told ET's Nischelle Turner at the stages in Studio City, California. «How does this happen? She’s not there all the time.

Star Ellen Pompeo is scaling back her on-screen presence to eight episodes, signaling a potential departure of her character Meredith which has been the heart of the medical drama since the start. Meanwhile, five new actors are joining as interns in one of the show’s biggest cast infusions ever, reminiscent of the Grey’s pilot that introduced Meredith and her fellow wide-eyed interns.
Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have seen it all on As the original cast members of ABC's long-running medical drama return for their 19th season, both acknowledged that this one will feel a bit different as the show welcomes a new class of interns and Ellen Pompeo takes on a more limited capacity, appearing in only eight episodes, though she'll continue to narrate. «We've been very well-practiced over the seasons as to what happens when our characters move in and out of our show,» Wilson, who returns as Miranda Bailey, told ET during the virtual season 19 junket.
starts fresh in season 19 with the introduction of five bright-eyed medical interns, all hungry to make their mark on the medical world. With Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital slowly rebuilding its reputation following the dramatics of last season and Meredith stepping into the chief role, the new class of interns — played by Harry Shum Jr. (Blue), Adelaide Kane (Jules), Midori Francis (Mika), Alexis Floyd (Simone) and Niko Terho (Lucas) — are breathing new life while also harkening back to the past as the medical drama turns over a new chapter. For Francis, who portrays one of the new interns, Mika, joining the family has been as close to a full-circle moment as one can get after having grown up with the franchise as a teen and largely being inspired by Sandra Oh's iconic character, Cristina Yang.«That character and seeing her, especially in the town I grew up in in New Jersey and what I was seeing on TV at that time, it was not [every day] an Asian actor was so present, had so much screen time and was so messy and so good,» the Sex Lives of College Girls star shared in a recent phone interview with ET, adding later that «something in my gut said that this was a good move» when the opportunity arose to come onto the show. Ahead of Thursday's premiere, the 28-year-old actress discusses why she's proud to be playing an Asian character who's not buttoned-up and perfect, surprises that are in store for viewers and why Ellen Pompeo's legacy is bigger than Meredith Grey.I was a fan.
Bachelor in Paradise airs and CBS premieres The Real Love Boat, inspired by the iconic 1970s series. The unscripted dating show features some surprise guest stars from the scripted series, and the husband-and-wife team of Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell try to help a group of singles find love on the high seas. There’s nothing I love more than celebrating love in a gorgeous location, and this delivers. On the drama front (though BiP and TRLB can never be accused of not bringing the drama), Grey’s Anatomy returns for season 19 and The Good Doctor begins season 5, both on ABC.
