Graeme Shinnie is no doubt he would have already lifted trophies at Aberdeen had Brendan Rodgers not been at Celtic.
The experienced midfielder will be part of the Dons squad that travels to Hampden this Sunday, looking to see off Rangers and to get a shot at another cup final. Shinnie has a Scottish Cup winners’ medal from his time at Inverness but his big regret was not adding to his collection in his first four years at Pittodrie.
Trips to Hampden were a regular thing under Derek McInnes but Shinnie and that team never managed to get over the line. Aberdeen did land the League Cup under McInnes but that was the year before Shinnie had arrived from Inverness. His Dons team boasted the quality of Scott McKenna, Kenny McLean, Jonny Hayes and Ryan Christie but they lost two League Cup Finals and a Scottish Cup showcase – all to Celtic.
Shinnie admitted things might have been different had they not had to go head-to-head with Rodgers’ all-conquering side that won all the domestic trophies in his time in Glasgow. He returned to Aberdeen on-loan from Wigan Athletic last week, much to the delight of the Red Army.
Shinnie is now looking to give them even more to cheer about with another big Hampden performance by seeing off Rangers and booking a Hampden return in the Viaplay League Cup final. Shinnie said: “It is very frustrating. During that time Brendan Rodgers was at Celtic and what they achieved was crazy.
“It was frustrating but we were beaten by a team that was very, very good. When that is the case you can accept it a little easier. There is always going to be that frustration because that Aberdeen team was very, very good but on the flip side of that we came up against very good teams as well.
“There was frustration
