On Wednesday’s episode of the Today show, Gillian Anderson talked about Ryan Coogler‘s rumored reboot of the long-running sci-fi series.
Anderson played FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files from 1992 to 2002.
“It’s so funny because for most of my life, since I have finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen, not going to happen,’” Anderson said “Now, Ryan Coog;er, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”
Calling Coogler “a bit of a genius,” Anderson said that “there’s a chance [a reboot will] happen.”
She added, “Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no. I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”
Anderson was previously involved in a two-season revival of the series, which ran on Fox from 2016 to 2018. The original series also led to two feature film spinoffs, The X-Files in 1998 and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008.
The X-Files premiered in 1993 with David Duchovny and Anderson starring as FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully, respectively. For 11 seasons, the duo investigated cases involving the paranormal. Carter said the show would be totally different today as “we’re steeped in conspiracies.”
Most recently, Coogler released the follow-up to Black Panther titled Wakanda Forever, which he co-write and directed. The film received recognition on the awards circuit, including five Oscar nominations.

drama “Scoop” hit Netflix on Friday. The film is a fictionalized portrayal of BBC reporter Emily Maitlis (played by Gillian Anderson), who interviewed Andrew for a “Nightsnight” segment in 2019 about his friendship with dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.Andrew was seen out and about at Windsor Castle riding his horse during his outing. He wore a helmet, gloves, a sweater and an olive jacket to brave the cold weather.Rufus Sewell plays Andrew in “Scoop,” while Keeley Hawes was cast as the royal’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk and Billie Piper as TV producer Sam McAlister. The movie also reveals how Maitlis booked the disastrous interview, which showed Andrew sweating as he denied that he had sexual relations with Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts when she was a teenager in the early 2000s.In 2022, Andrew was stripped of his royal and military titles by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, after Roberts brought forward a lawsuit against him and claimed he sexually abused her.

The Duke of York's notorious BBC Newsnight interview is being thrust back into the limelight due to a brand new Netflix dramatisation that premieres on Friday, 5 April.Titled Scoop, the film reveals how the BBC team landed the disastrous interview, which ultimately led to Prince Andrew's exile from Royal life. Actor Rufus Sewell steps into the shoes of the prince, with parts of the interview by Emily Maitlis, portrayed by Gillian Anderson , recreated for the show. The drama also portrays Andrew at his residence, Royal Lodge in Windsor, which he shares with his former wife Sarah Ferguson. However, he previously resided at Buckingham Palace in London, where several assertions have been made about the eccentric nature of his bedroom.
Prince Andrew's life has been significantly altered - his home is in disrepair, he was snubbed at Beatrice's wedding and he's lost his titles. The Duke of York's downfall was triggered by a disastrous BBC interview.
When Prince Andrew submitted to being interviewed by Emily Maitlis for Newsnight, it made blockbuster viewing. Now Netflix’s Scoop brings the behind-the-scenes story to life and it’s even more compelling. Based on the book by former Newsnight editor Sam McAlister, Scoop looks at how Sam (played by Billie Piper) secured the royal chat for presenter Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), who went on to quiz the prince on his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual assault against him by Virginia Giuffre.
The Netflix movie “Scoop,” (premiering April 5), dramatizes Prince Andrew’s famously disastrous November 2019 Newsnight interview. The movie follows BBC anchor Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson) and her team as she interviews the Duke of York, 64, (Rufus Sewell) about his alleged relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein (who died of apparent suicide earlier that year). She also presses Prince Andrew about Virginia Giuffre’s sex abuse allegations, which he denied (and in 2022, they settled her sex abuse lawsuit out of court). In the real interview, Prince Andrew defended his choice to stay in a convicted sex offender’s home when he visited New York because he said that Epstein’s digs were, “A convenient place to stay.”The car-crash of an interview led to Prince Andrew getting fired from official royal duties by his mom, Queen Elizabeth II.
In many ways, “Scoop” is not the movie you think it is. Sure, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at how the BBC television program, er, “programme” “Newsnight” landed a hotly sought-after interview with Prince Andrew in 2019.
Guy Lodge Film Critic It’s no great slight to “Scoop” to say that it’s no more compelling than the real-life news broadcast on which it pivots. It’s also no less compelling than said broadcast, which was, after all, a doozy: the 2019 episode of “BBC Newsnight” in which anchor Emily Maitlis interviewed Prince Andrew about his friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
K.J. Yossman Gillian Anderson is set to take center stage at the Southbank Centre season of literature and spoken world in London this fall.
