BBC One sitcom Ghosts is being laid to rest as it returns for its fifth and final season, with its comedic cast closing the doors of Button House for good. Although, star Laurence Rickard admits that the decision was a hard one - especially as the BBC wanted the show to go on. “It was very tricky to say no to that and it certainly wasn’t a decision we took lightly - it was heart-wrenching for everyone,” the 48-year-old, who plays caveman Robin and headless nobleman Sir Humphrey Bone.
“But we were really lucky that we got to that high point in terms of viewership and the temptation to go out on a high is paramount. You want to get the big applause of the curtain call rather than seeing people wander out of the theatre.” The BAFTA-nominated comedy stars Call the Midwife 's Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Alison and Mike, a couple who inherit an old country mansion and discover that following an accident, Alison can see its ghostly inhabitants. In its final series, the pair explore new ways to keep Button House afloat after a recent fire and receive some unexpected news that causes major changes for the ghosts, played by the stars of Horrible Histories.
“There’s a couple of quite hard left turns in the series - and a very hard left turn at the end,” Laurence teases, while co-star Ben Willibond reveals that the episodes show flashbacks featuring his character the Captain, a closeted World War II officer. “We dig into his backstory a little more. I think he is happy deep down, he just needs a bit more time,” he says.
