Maurice Benard, 60.For three decades, he’s played mob boss Sonny Corinthos on the iconic ABC soap opera, but he initially feared it would be a short gig. “When I first started … I had my third manic episode,” Benard, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 22, told The Post. “So it sticks in my head how loyal and incredible they were not to fire me.
If I want to leave or something, I always think about that time.”Benard has won three Daytime Emmys in his decades on the show, which is the longest-running scripted drama on TV. On Saturday, it celebrates its 60th anniversary.Viewers first checked into “General Hospital” on April 1, 1963, and Benard and his castmates are still stirring up love — and drama — every weekday afternoon in the fictional upstate New York town of Port Charles. The prescription for success is “a lot of hard work” and “fans who are more loyal than any fans in the whole world,” according to Benard. The actor first tuned into “GH” — as the show is known by its diehard fans — as a teenager.“I watched it when I was sick when I was about 13,” he said.
“I watched ‘All My Children’ and ‘General Hospital,’ and I ended up being on both shows.”He got his start on “All My Children,” appearing on that now-defunct ABC soap as bad boy Nico Kelly from 1987 to 1990. Three years later, he headed to “General Hospital.”When he was offered the choice to play one of two gangsters on the show — dimpled Brooklynite Sonny Corinthos or nepo-baby mobster Damian Smith — he chose Sonny. “I said, ‘Ah, that’s a cool name!’”It wasn’t meant to be a 30-year job.

And then when I read the script, I found it shocking and emotionally devastating.”After it aired, fans then mocked Strong for the use of the word, with some saying it’s not a real word.In response, the Merriam-Webster dictionary then tweeted the word’s definition, revealing that the adverb is “relating to the art or technique of dramatic composition and theatrical representation”.In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Strong stuck by his use of the word.
Emanuel Okusanya The fast-rising Afropop singer Ayra Starr says she always knew she was destined for greatness. It didn’t take long: She’d signed with the major African label Mavin, racked up hundreds of millions of streams, headlined a U.K. tour and gotten cosigns from many of her idols, all before her 21st birthday this coming June. After her debut single “Away” shot her to stardom in her native Nigeria, her hit single “Rush” has surpassed 100 million streams on both Spotify and YouTube, and she just dropped a tag-team single with labelmate DJ Big N and singer Oxlade called “How Many Times.” It all began simply enough: She’d been singing with her brother for most of her life, and one day when she was 18, “I posted a video — it was the first original song I posted online,” she recalls, “and the next day my executive producer called me and invited me to the studio. Literally three days later I was signed.” The label in question is Mavin Records, the powerhouse Nigeria-based company that launched the global careers of industry icons such as Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy, Rema and others. Her career vaulted to the next level with “Bloody Samaritan” — an R&B banger that took off in the U.K. and caught the attention of Kelly Rowland, who later joined the remix and became a mentor to Starr.

General Hospital,” the longest running scripted show currently in production, turns 60 on April 1, and to commemorate that momentous occasion, Variety gathered five of its iconic stars together. Here, Genie Francis, Maurice Benard, Kin Shriner, Kristina Wagner and Tristan Rogers discuss the ABC’s soap opera’s loyal fandom, and reminisce about its heyday, when supercouple Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Francis) — creations of then-executive producer Gloria Monty — lifted the show into the pop culture stratosphere. “General Hospital,” one of only four remaining daytime dramas, keeps breaking its own Emmys records — having won Outstanding Daytime Drama 15 times. Frank Valentini, its executive producer and showrunner since 2012, says incorporating the show’s legacy characters with new cast members is key to its longevity. “We’re not focusing on the history,” he says. “We’re moving forward with the history.” It helps that viewers see the cast as family: “For a large part of the audience, it is an incredibly nostalgic, familiar show that they love to check in on,” Valentini says.
