A fugitive paedophile who fled Scotland after being convicted of possessing indecent photos of children has been jailed.
William Dempster, 46, jetted off to Thailand in 2014 after being convicted of hoarding a stash of over 60,000 images. He fled the country before he was due to be sentenced, and detectives discovered he had travelled to Bangkok via Heathrow Airport.
It took seven years for Thai authorities to consider Police Scotland's request to extradite Dempster. In a joint operation launched last year, authorities from both countries worked together to bring him to justice.
A specialist extradition unit in Scotland discovered his whereabouts before Royal Thai Police officers swooped on the coastal city of Pattaya in May this year. On Friday, September 23 Dempster, originally from the Tayside area but latterly of Lanarkshire, was extradited back to Scotland with the assistance of the National Crime Agency and the Thailand Office of the Attorney General.
He finally appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court for sentencing on Monday, November 14. The paedophile was given an 18-month prison sentence and has been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
Police Scotland has welcomed the sentence, and has thanked the Thai authorities for their assistance in bringing Dempster in.
Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Livingstone said: “Police Scotland officers are committed to relentlessly pursuing criminals who think they are untouchable or above the law and Dempster thought he could evade justice by fleeing the country.
"Our officers worked tirelessly in partnership with our law enforcement colleagues and did not give up on arresting him and bringing him back to Scotland to face the consequences of his crimes.
