From ‘Only Murders’ to ‘The Afterparty,’ Why Murder Mysteries Are Having a Moment

“Knives Out 2” isn’t the only murder mystery hitting theaters later this year, as Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for “See How They Run” that finds Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan investigating a suspicious murder in 1950s London.Written by Mark Chappell (“Flaked”) and directed by Tom George (“This Country”), “See How Thy Run” takes place in the West End where plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after the film’s Hollywood director (played by Adrien Brody) is murdered. A weary inspector (Rockwell) and an eager rookie constable (Ronan) take on the case, and quickly find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground.“Knives Out” surely didn’t invent the comedic whodunit and “See How They Run” owes as much to Agatha Christie as anything, albeit with a wry, Wes Anderson-like flair.Check out the trailer in the video above.

Move over, Sherlock Holmes. London has two new inquiring minds on the case of a murdered actor in the ensemble murder-mystery-comedy “See How They Run”.

In addition to showcasing Daniel Craig’s dialectical range, Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” proved that the lone detective whodunit is still alive and kicking. It grossed over $300 million at the box-office (on a budget of $40 million), and its critical reception was nothing short of adoring (read ThePlaylist’s A-grade review here).

It’s been nearly 15 years since David Mamet directed a feature film, with “Redbelt” arriving in 2008. But the writer, director, playwright, and multi-hyphenate isn’t done with filmmaking yet and has just announced what his next feature will be.

EXCLUSIVE: David Mamet will direct 2 Days/1963, a drama scripted by Nicholas Celozzi that purports to tell how his great uncle, the notorious Chicago mobster Sam Giancana, arranged the assassination of President John F Kennedy, as revenge for trying to bring down organized crime after the mob helped put JFK in the White House. Mamet, the twice Oscar nominated scribe and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, will do a rewrite on Celozzi’s script. The film will be produced by Celozzi through his Monaco Films, with VP Michael Sportelli also producing. Bonnie Giancana, daughter of the late mobster, will be a consultant and executive producer.

Rather, director Richard Gray’s well-crafted and handsomely mounted indie is as much a solidly constructed mystery as it is it a conventionally satisfying oater, with much to recommend to fans of either genre who rarely get to sample such a mix.

There was a sense after the first season of Hulu’s hit “Only Murders in the Building” that this would be a tough act to follow. How many murders can there be in the Arconia? Tyler Sanders, who starred on the Amazon spinoff series Just Add Magic: Mystery City and guest-starred on 9-1-1: Lone Star, Fear the Walking Dead and The Rookie, died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 18. His agent Pedro Tapia confirmed the news but did not provide details. He added that Sanders’ death is under investigation.
