There’s an old saying: ‘He who wears many hats’ to describe someone with a multi-faceted skill set, who can turn their hand to many things. Perhaps two of the most dissimilar hats one could wear would be that of an author and a board game inventor- yet these two hats are exactly the type worn by the man behind Vickers Holdings Ltd.
Alongside running his own business and raising a family who are now grown, Neil Vickers has managed to produce not only a property-based board game aimed at families, but also a self-published romance fiction novel. Due to his previous experience as a property developer- a career spanning 40 years- Neil was able to apply his unique insight into construction and real estate in order to develop a game that was both realistic and involved.
He initially designed the House Builder game over two decades ago, but it wasn’t until he had his family over for Christmas and in the post-dinner lull they were looking for a board game to play that the idea of launching it himself. Despite believing his family were ‘not particularly competitive,’ when they began playing, a side to them that he’d never seen before was unleashed, with each of them desperate to complete their house before the other.
“They all wanted to win, and competition was fierce between family members, but the first to put their roof on the house is the one who wins,” he explained.
“The game brings engagement to the players, as it’s very visual. From one quick glance at your opponent you can see how much of the house they have built, which can bring out the fun and competitive nature of the builder.”
The aim of the game is to build your own property, navigating the pitfalls of being a property developer, trying to beat the other players
