A recent survey found just 13% of staff go into the office on Fridays. And with severe staff shortages in many industries, some bosses say they have to offer flexible working to attract and keep workers.
But as employees adopt the new routine, it's changing the way we socialise and having a major impact on businesses in Manchester city centre. "Thursday is like the new Friday," says Alan Hudd, licensee of the Briton's Protection, one of the city centre's oldest pubs.
"You used to be able to guarantee Fridays and Saturdays would be busy and that would cover you for the rest of the week. Saturdays are still consistent, but now Fridays are very hit and miss because, post-covid, not that many people work in town, so they're not going out for a drink after work.
"Friday lunchtime is dead and it picks up a bit about 6-7pm. But Thursdays are busier now with people going for a drink after work."
Months after covid restrictions were lifted there's still not been a widescale return to the office. Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics show that in May 24% of workers were dividing their time between home and the office, up from 13% in early February.
