Former Minnesota Police Officer Charged With Murder in Death of George Floyd

UPDATE 2, 6/8/20, 2:41pm ET: Derek Chauvin was ordered to be held on a $1.25 million bail in his first court appearance since being arrested, on June 8. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the May 25 death of George Floyd. He is due back in court on June 29, and faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted. 

As a result of the Black Lives Matter protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd last month, streams for N.W.A.‘s 1988 hip-hop anthem “F**k tha Police” have nearly quadrupled in overall numbers.

On Wednesday night, the singer-songwriter, Beyoncé, took to her social media to share her thoughts on the killing of George Floyd as well as the worldwide protests that kicked off as a result. E! Online reported that Beyoncé expressed herself candidly following the news that an additional three officers involved were also arrested.

On May 25, unarmed, handcuffed black man George Floyd was killed by police officer Derek Chauvin. On Wednesday, after that began in Minnesota but spread to all fifty states, the three officers who stood by and watched George Floyd die were finally charged.

UPDATE, 6/3/20, 3:31pm ET: Derek Chauvin has now been hit with an additional charge of second degree murder in the death of George Floyd, according to the State of Minnesota. The felony charge includes a sentence of up to 40 years in prison, according to the amended complaint obtained by HollywoodLife. The complaint argues that Chauvin acted “without intent to effect the death of any person, while committing or attempting to commit a felony offense” when Floyd died.

It takes courage to calmly confront National Guardsmen amid a Black Lives Matter protest, and actress/host Keke Palmer, 26, showed that she has strength and leadership in spades. The Strahan, Sara and Keke host was part of a large gathering in Hollywood on June 2, and already the area around Hollywood and Highland Boulevards had been occupied by armed guardsmen and their military vehicles.

Jay-Z has called Minnesota Governor Tim Walz demanding justice for the death of George Floyd.

Hollywood is reacting to the arrest of Derek Chauvin, who has been charged with the murder of George Floyd.  On Friday, the former Minneapolis police officer was taken into custody and faces charges of 3rd-degree murder and manslaughter.
