“I woke up today, at least that much is true,” Florence sings over a melancholic production on “I Hate Myself.” She closes by reflecting on the work that is going into turning her life around.
In comparison, “The Best Part” ends with a declaration of continuing love.
“I wrote these songs for my character Allison in the movie to perform, but also as a way to process and digest her mindset and her low headspace,” Florence told The Guardian. “It was unbelievably helpful and hard; I wanted a song to reflect the self-hatred she had for herself in a way that the audience can truly understand.”
A Good Person, directed by Zach Braff, centers on Allison, whose world crumbles in the blink of an eye when she survives an unimaginable tragedy, emerging from recovery with an opioid addiction and unresolved grief.
The movie – which also stars Morgan Freeman, Molly Shannon and more – premiered in select theaters on March 24 and everywhere on March 31.
Florence recently revealed that one of the movie’s pivotal scenes is very real.
