In June 1999, Dutch pop purveyors Vengaboys scored their first Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart with Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!
The Eurodance banger debuted in the top spot to push the previous week's Number 1, S Club 7's iconic debut single Bring It All Back, down to Number 2.
Interestingly, Vengaboys' thumping Eurodance banger has two very familiar names on its songwriting credits: Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. That's because the first verse of Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom! interpolates ABBA's 1981 hit Lay All Your Love on Me.
Once you hear it, you'll never unhear it.
When Vengaboys joined us in 2021 to look back at their biggest hits, singer Kim Sasabone said: "There is a story behind the ABBA interpolation, but if we told you we would have to kill you."
Back in June 1999, the second-highest new entry came from Britney Spears, who debuted at Number 3 with Sometimes. This marked the pop princess' second Official Singles Chart hit following her chart-topping debut single …Baby One More Time, which was still in the Top 40 that week at Number 31.
Another notable new entry came from soap star-turned-pop star Adam Rickitt, who swapped Corrie's cobbles for the upper echelons of the Official Singles Chart. In fact, he entered at a very impressive Number 5 with his club-ready debut single I Breathe Again.
Adam would go on to score a further two Top 40 hits with Everything My Heart Desires and Best Thing, but neither charted as high as his fondly remembered first single.
Also debuting in the Top 10 were American boyband *NSYNC, who entered at Number 9 with Tearin' Up My Heart. This pop banger had originally peaked at Number 40 in 1997, but returned to the Official Singles Chart (and claimed a much higher position) following
