‘First Cow,’ ‘Nomadland’ Top AP’s Best Films Of 2020

I’ve been holed up in Brooklyn since early March, save a few treks across state lines via rental car, and on each of those trips I’ve been sure to visit a drive-in. That’s how I caught “Jaws” on the Fourth of July, and “Boys State” and “The Rental.” But half of the movies on this, my top 10 favorite movies of 2020 list, are ones that I saw in honest-to-god theaters way back in the spring.

The New York, Los Angeles and Boston critics have had their say and now we begin the long, tedious rollout of other critics groups who insist their honors are not meant to have any influence on guild or Oscar voters. The Chicago Film Critics Association and Florida Film Critics Circle have now made their selections and anointed, respectfully, “Nomadland” and “First Cow” as Best Picture.

When you want to hear recommendations for the Best Films of 2020, you could listen to critics, outlets, or even your friends and family. However, sometimes you can just take the word of one of the best filmmakers on the planet, like Pedro Almodóvar.

It was admittedly hard to express a lot of interest in new films when my brain was just that gif of Dorinda from “Real Housewives of New York” spitting, “I’ll tell you how I’m doing! Not well, bitch!” playing on a loop. Film felt frivolous, with the collapse of many industries, the rise in homelessness, the lack of leadership, the absence of infrastructure to support and protect people, and continued racial injustice waking people up to systems and paradigms of inequity.

The New York Film Critics Circle has selected Kelly Reichardt's First Cow as its best picture of 2020. The group gave two awards to Eliza Hittman's Never Rarely Sometimes Always (best actress for star Sidney Flanigan and screenplay for Hittman) and Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods (best actor for Delroy Lindo and supporting actor for the late Chadwick Boseman).
