F Lee Bailey, one of the most famous defence lawyers of his generation, has died at the age of 87, his former colleague has said. The criminal defence lawyer is best known for representing and helping to acquit OJ Simpson and Dr Sam Sheppard, who were both accused of murdering their wives.

F Lee Bailey, the celebrity lawyer who defended OJ Simpson, Patricia Hearst and the alleged Boston Strangler has died at the age of 87, a former colleague said. The death was confirmed by Peter Horstmann, who worked with Mr Bailey as an associate in the same law office for seven years.

Washington Post reported June 3. Born Francis Lee Bailey, Jr., the attorney rose to prominence when he helped acquit physician Samuel Sheppard on charges of murdering his spouse in 1954 after arguing that excessive publicity around the case didn’t allow Sheppard a fair and unbiased trial.
