WATCH: WHO interviews Vance Joy at the AACTASSo it is with Vance Joy (formerly James Keogh), the three-time ARIA Music Award winner whose recent ode to long-distance love, ‘Missing Piece’, has been certified double platinum and was featured in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.“I released that song and really felt a warm response from people who were just connecting with it,” Joy, 34, tells WHO over Zoom from Spain, talking about the lead single to his first album in four years, In Our Own Sweet Time.“That was a lovely surprise, because in the meantime music changes, it always does, but it’s nice to stick to your guns and go, ‘OK, this is the way I play, and these are the choices that I feel inclined to make,’ and people go, ‘Oh, it feels like you.’”Vance Joy poses with one of his ARIA awards.Ten years ago, you created the name Vance Joy and recorded ‘Riptide’. Do you think about those things in terms of anniversaries or milestones?Yeah, a little bit.
I thought about 10 years because that somehow seems significant, but also kind of goes [by] quickly. I’m very proud of the fact that songs keep coming.
WhenI was starting out, I was like, “Will I make a second album? Will I make a third album?” And you just do it.
