Scots are set to see a spectacular sight in the skies as the Eta Aquariid meteor shower is expected to peak within hours.
The phenomenon will light up the skies in the early hours of Saturday, May 6, much to the delight of stargazers across Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world. The display is made up of between 120 and 160 shooting stars per hour, with the Eta Aquariids set to occur when the Earth passes through the debris trail of Comet Halley.
According to the Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG), a leading group of space research facilities in the UK, the spectacular will be most visible on Saturday and Sunday - May 6 and May 7.
According to the experts the shower has been active since April 19 and will continue until May 28, but will peak between midnight and dawn on May 6.
The space debris making up the shower will speed through Earth's night sky at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per second causing streaks of light that some may be lucky enough to spot.
The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is one of two each year with the Orionid meteor shower expected in October.
The shower gets its name from the Aquarius constellation. This is the part of the sky where the spectacular will be most visible with one star within it named Eta Aquarii.
