BBC star Clive Myrie choked back tears as he announced the death of his colleague George Alagiah.
Earlier today we reported the legendary newsreader has died at the age of 67 after a nine-year battle with bowel cancer. His agent Mary Greenham confirmed to the PA news agency: “I am so terribly sorry to inform you that George Alagiah died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
“George fought until the bitter end but sadly that battle ended earlier today.
“George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public. He simply was a wonderful human being.
“My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family.”
Clive was struggling to contain his emotion as he was tasked with telling BBC viewers the sad news. The pair had worked together for years, as reports the Mirror.
As his voice was breaking, Clive said: "On a personal note, George touched all our lives with kindness and generosity. His warmth and good humour... we loved him here at BBC News and I loved him as a mentor, colleague and friend.
"His spirit, strength and courage he showed in the later years of his life are something his family can be so proud of. Journalism has lost a giant."
Clive's emotional tribute was welcomed by those watching at home with one tweeting: "Two of the best and and most decent journalists."
Clive wasn't the only BBC staffer who was affected today as Breakfast host Naga Munchetty broke down in tears live on air after discovering her colleague had died.
The announcement that George died peacefully "surrounded by his family and loved ones" came as Naga was in the middle of her 5 Live radio show and she was clearly upset as she told listeners: "We've had the very sad news
