Elisabeth Moss is looking back at one of the Mad Men scenes she most remembered. The Emmy award-winning star grew close with co-star Jon Hamm over the years and recalled the scene where Peggy tells Don she was leaving the agency.
“It all felt very real. I have a very close relationship with John,” Moss said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “There was sort of like a mentor-protegé relationship there, very older brother, little sister. And so it meant something to the both of us when we did this scene.”
The scene is from Season 5 and it originally aired in 2012 on AMC. Moss and Hamm were seemingly so emotional filming that they improvised a touching moment that is now part of the history of the show. In the scene, Hamm’s character gives Moss’ character a kiss on her hand as they said goodbye.
“That right there is real, that’s actually, those are real tears, which you know, hate to break it to you but often we’re faking it,” Moss pointed out. “He held onto my hand and didn’t let go and then kissed it. None of that was in the script and he did it on my close-up. That right there is real Jon, the veins in his head, I can see him in that moment.”
Moss also mentioned that she kept the costume she used in that scene as a memento from the show and chose that one because of what it meant to her.

It’s been a hot minute since we heard from filmmaker Mark Pellington, known for “The Mothman Prophecies” and “Arlington Road.” Pellington famously got his start in MTV-era music videos directing Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” video to great acclaim, including winning four MTV awards in 1993, including Best Director and Video of the Year. Pellington used that success to move into dramatic live-action features, which segues nicely into his latest (re) release.
has seen a lot changes for Yvonne Strahovski’s character, Serena Joy, who started the season as the figurehead of Gilead following the assassination of her husband, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), who was mourned with an elaborate televised funeral. Since then, her plans to open a Gilead cultural center in Canada were met with extreme pushback before she eventually took up residence with Sons of Jacobs supporters, The Wheelers, where she was forced to live life as a handmaid. Now, in episode 7, «No Man’s Land,» Serena finds herself turning to June (Elisabeth Moss) for help as she gives birth to her son, Noah, as the series flashes back to their early days in Gilead, when June was still a handmaiden named Offred and the two were learning the Republic’s bizarre birthing ritual. «Serena doesn’t seem like she is redeemable, but it is quite unexpected, I think, how the season evolves,» Strahovski tells ET as she and Moss break down Serena’s birth scene.
