Workers stripping out a disused golf store in Edinburgh were amazed to uncover a forgotten fishmongers established over 100 years ago when Edward VII sat on the throne.
Edinburgh Live reports that workers dismantling fixtures in the former Edinburgh Golf Centre discovered hand-painted tiles, antique cast iron fittings and 19th century ornamental cornicing that have been hidden behind false walls for years.
The tiling is believed to originate from the early 1900s when a fishmonger was established on the site. Intricate artwork of fish, poultry and other animals features on the slates, and archives suggest that a fish shop run by Mr George Young was operating out of the unit in 1909.
A newspaper advert from the time suggested the fishmongers stocked everything from cod and haddock to rabbit meat. Local man Colin Fergus Smith snapped images of the interior and shared them on Twitter, marvelling and delighting others.
He wrote: "Lowered ceilings and false walls stripped out of this shop unit on Dalry Rd, hope they keep the best bits in the refurb."
Replying, one Twitter user said: "Beautiful! Hope the original ceiling is in good condition. Love the tiles as well." Another commented: "I still refuse to understand why anyone would put in false ceilings and walls to hide this."
Workers are understood to be stripping out the former golf shop, on Dalry Road, to convert it into an office space. The new tenant is said to be interested in preserving the original features.
