Edinburgh Airport cancels flights for arrival of Queen's coffin

Passengers have been evacuated from Edinburgh Airport after a fire broke out at Hudson Bar and Grill.

Once there, the coffin was placed inside the State Hearse.

The coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died on 8 September, was moved from Buckingham Palace at the highly significant time of 2.22pm to Westminster Hall where it will lie-in-state for members of the public to pay their respects until Monday 19 September, the day of the late monarch's funeral.The Queen's coffin was followed on foot by her four children, King Charles III, 73, Princess Anne, 72, Prince Andrew, 62, and Prince Edward, 58, as well as her grandsons, Prince William, 40, and Prince Harry, 37, - who walked side-by-side - and Peter Phillips, 44, who is the son of Princess Anne.

Flights have been cancelled at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday afternoon during the Queen’s coffin procession. British Airways has cancelled 16 short-haul flights due to airspace restrictions to ensure the procession isn’t disturbed.

The Queen has embarked on her final journey back home to London after a night in St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, where over 26,000 people came to pay their respects following her death on 8 September. A round of applause was heard by the crowds lining the walls of the cathedral as the coffin of the Queen was placed into a car before being driven out of the grounds and down the Royal Mile. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's coffin will be accompanied by her beloved daughter Princess Anne, 72, as they'll be driven 40 minutes to Edinburgh Airport.

During the Lying-in-State period, the Queen’s closed coffin will rest on a raised platform, known as a catafalque, inside Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminster, aka the Houses of Parliament. Members of the public attending will file past the catafalque to pay their respects. “If you wish to attend the Lying-in-State, please note that there will be a queue, which is expected to be very long. You will need to stand for many hours, possibly overnight, with very little opportunity to sit down as the queue will be continuously moving,” state the DCMS guidelines.

Thousands of people have already lined the streets of Edinburgh as they await t he arrival of Her Majesty the Queen’s coffin. Despite the massive crowds, which started forming from around 10am, there is a remarkably sombre mood amongst those waiting to pay their respects the the late monarch.
