East Ayrshire Council are planning to introduce a £30 charge to lift brown bins for the year.
At the moment the service is free along with the green bin and recycling uplift.
But council chiefs say that the service is not statutory and that they can no longer afford to provide the service for free.
The proposal was announced ahead of councillors setting their budget in the coming weeks.
The move could generate between £450,000 and £750,000 for the local authority.
