A number of buildings in Dumfries were lit up in purple to celebrate World Polio Day last week thanks to the town’s two Rotary Clubs.
Theouncil headquarters, The Cairndale Hotel and The Venue nightclub took part with the colour representing the mark put on children’s fingers to show they have been
vaccinated.
The Rotary Club of Dumfries and Dumfries Devorgilla thanks each of the venues for their support to promote World Polio Day, which is held on the birthday of Jonas Salk, a celebrated American virologist who developed one of the first successful polio vaccines.
Andrew Clark of Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club said the eradication of polio has been an aim of Rotary International for more than 40 years, originally with a tag of Polio Plus.
He said: “Rotary’s goal of ridding the world of this terrible disease is closer than ever.
“Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“However, it is crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free.
“If all eradication efforts stopped today, then within 10 years polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year. Truly, this is a frightening prospect.”
For World Polio Day, the two Rotary clubs also carried out a collection for End Polio Now at Palmerston Park before Queen of the South’s home game against Cove Rangers, with the kind permission of the club. It raised more than £300.
And during half-time, Dumfries Rotary Club were able to present a cheque for £4,000 on the pitch to Queen of the South Community Trust to help them with their great work in the local community.
The funds were generate at the club’s successful charity golf Am-Am at Dumfries and County Golf Club in August.
