Some homeowners in Dumfries and Galloway are facing a potential council tax hike of 22.5 per cent.
Councillors on the finance committee will on Tuesday consider proposals for increasing charges for properties in the highest bands E to H.
They are being asked for their views on a joint report from the Scottish Government and COSLA named “Consultation on a Fairer Council Tax”.
The paper suggests council tax bills could rise by 7.5 per cent for band E properties, 12.5 per cent for F, 17.5 per cent for G and a whopping 22.5 per for band H.
In Dumfries and Galloway that would see bills for band E properties rise by £131 to £1,885.
For those in band H the council tax would increase by £735 to £4,006 a year.
Councillors will be told that the proposals would affect about a quarter of homes in the region, largely from band E and F.
In a report for Tuesday’s meeting Paul Garrett, the council’s head of finance and procurement, states: “The proposed changes would generate an estimated £176 million, before the impact of the council tax reduction scheme, at a time when Scottish local governments faces very significant financial
challenges.
“The current levels of cost inflation and higher interest rates associated with an overall increased cost of living is impacting across all households and it is recognised that the proposed changes will increase these pressures for some
households.
“It is generally accepted that the current cost of living pressures, while impacting on most households, are having a proportionately greater impact on lower income households.
“Further review and potential reform of the current council tax system is still required.
“In the absence of this more fundamental review at this stage, the current
