Is it wrong, right now, to be as happy as Dua Lipa’s second album makes you? Is this any time to celebrate pop music at its most ebullient, when we should be bullish on meditation? Shouldn’t we be focusing our attention on weightier matters than how to all guiltlessly throw ourselves a solo disco party?
The streamlined aesthetic of Dua Lipa’s new album, Future Nostalgia, gives throwback funk and disco a boldface-and-italic redesign. Touchstones of 1980s synth-pop and ’90s dance music meld together with the bright, rhythmic hits of the 2000s—songs that played on Top 40 during the day and again as club remixes during weekend late nights.
Dua Lipa recently explained that she wants her new album, Future Nostalgia, to “sit alongside some of my favourite classic pop songs, whilst still feeling fresh and uniquely mine,” and perhaps nowhere is this more evident than on “Love Again.” The album’s 8th track features a prominent trumpet sample taken from a classic ‘90s UK hit: “Your Woman” by White Town.
A little earlier than initially planned, Dua Lipa has released her sophomore album Future Nostalgia. The record, which follows 2017’s Dua Lipa, was led by “Don’t Start Now,” “Future Nostalgia,” and “Physical,” as well as “Don’t Break My Heart,” which got a new music video earlier this week.
