Drivers of petrol and diesel cars face paying more on their vehicle as part of new tax rules coming into force later this year.
The Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) will target drivers based off the type of vehicle that they drive.
Rates will rise for most drivers, with the increase coming into effect from April 1 this year, Surrey Live reports.
Drivers whose cars produce more pollution will be hit with a higher rate under the rules.
Vehicles that produce 255g/km of CO2 pollution will see VED rates be charged at £2,365 - which is a rise of £120 from the 2021 rate.
Drivers of cars that produce 226 to 255 g/km of CO2 pollution will rise by £105, and those producing 191 to 225 g/km will increase by £75.
If your vehicle produces less than 75 g/km of CO2, you will not see a rise in the VED rate.
Sean Kemple, spokesperson for Close Brothers Motor Finance, said car owners of petrol and diesel cares will be more affected based on the “type of vehicle they are purchasing”.
He warned of the "challenge" as more drivers switch to electric cars, saying the government would need to "offset" tax revenues.
Speaking to the Express, Mr Kemple said: "You can see the incentive from a tax perspective of road tax and benefit in kind moving towards lower emission vehicles.
"That's better for everyone involved so it's a win-win situation.
"The challenge then is, how does the Government then offset those tax receipts in terms of what they would have been getting from petrol and diesel vehicles?
"What you then see is the consumers of petrol and diesel, in their view, I suppose being penalised by the type of vehicle they are purchasing."
