A doctor has shared two red flags to look out for vascular dementia after TV newsreader Alastair Stewart revealed that he had the condition. Dr Mark Porter, who has appeared on the BBC and ITV’s This Morning, said there are risk areas people need to be aware of when it comes to the condition.
The doctor added that the condition is easier to prevent than other illnesses such as Alzheimers. It comes after Mr Stewart, 71, shared that he had early onset vascular dementia on Sunday.
He retired from regular broadcasting on GB News earlier this year after nearly five decades on air. Stewart told GB News programme The Camilla Tominey Show that he felt “a bit discombobulated” about six or nine months ago when he had difficulties with the time and doing his shoelaces, Wales Online reports.

A scan showed that he had had a series of minor strokes and he was diagnosed with vascular dementia, which affects around 180,000 people in the UK and means damage has been caused to the blood cells. Dr Porter, a GP, wrote in his health column in The Times that early vascular dementia is often overlooked compared to Alzheimers, and said they both account for at least 80 per cent of cases in the UK.
He said they: “Have a profound effect on cognitive function and behaviour, and are very difficult to treat. However, vascular dementia is easier to prevent. And these preventive measures can slow progression in established cases too.”
Dr Porter outlined two risk areas people might not be aware of - one being snoring: “First, snoring. More specifically obstructive sleep apnoea, where heavy snorers stop breathing multiple times during the night. Sleep
