EXCLUSIVE: Disney+ Hotstar has set Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo as its latest original series.
The show comes from director Homi Adajania and Maddock Films, and stars Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar and Isha Talwar in lead roles. Ashish Verma, Varun Mitra, Udit Arora, Deepak Dobriyal and Monica Dogra will also appear.
A May 5 launch date has been set for its Indian streaming debut.
The series is billed as a new spin on the ‘says-bahu’ drama sub-genre that explores the power dynamics between tough, ruthless mothers-in-law and meeker daughter-in-laws. Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo will instead feature am “unapologetically hardcore” mother-in-law and “steadfast and formidable” younger women.
“With Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo, we are proud to present a show that challenges on-screen portrayals of saas-bahu relationships and introduces viewers to a new level of drama and power play,” says Gaurav Banerjee, Head of Content for Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star.
Maddock Films’ founder Dinesh Vijay added it would be a “fiery, crazy and genre-defining take on the age-old saas-bahu saga,” while Adajania said the series was “to date the maddest world I have created.”
“It’s a bunch of bad-ass women telling a narrative that is often played only by male characters and believe me, it’s got some of the most colorful characters you’ll ever see,” added actress Kapadia. “The show is as wild as my crazy director Homi Adajania’s mind. He has flipped a family drama on it’s head giving us such a captivating binge-watch that’ll be coming on Disney+ Hotstar.”

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief In cricket-mad India the upcoming Indian Premier League tournament could be a watershed for the country’s jostling media empires, according to Singapore-based consultancy and analysis firm, Media Partners Asia. Video rights for the tournament were split between incumbent pay-TV player Disney Star India, which paid close to $3.1 billion for broadcast rights to the five 2023-2027 editions, and Viacom18, which is backed by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Paramount (as a minority stakeholder), in partnership with financier Bodhi Tree Systems. It paid a similar sum for the separate digital rights. Media Partners Asia estimates that advertising revenues spawned by the two-month 2023 competition will end up around $550 million – representing a clear loss on the annualized cost of $1.2 billion, or roughly $600 million per conglomerate, for the tournament rights. (The analysis firm forecasts that RIL will earn $300-350 million in ad sales, while Star’s best-case scenario is $220 million.)
