A deal reached Friday between a coalition of stage unions and the organization representing Broadway producers for wage payments and additional health contributions to aid stage workers in distress doesn’t — and couldn’t — include playwrights, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The reason? Unlike screen and television writers, playwrights are independent contractors who license their work to producers for a fee.

Leaders of the Directors Guild of America have approved a three-year successor deal to the DGA master contract, triggering a ratification vote by the 18,000 members.

The Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers will begin talks March 23 on a new three-year theatrical and television agreement ahead of a May 1 contract expiration, the WGA disclosed Friday. Negotiators are expected to grapple with issues that include basic wage increases, residuals, and compensation, holds and exclusivity related to short seasons such as are common on streaming platforms.
