Johnny Depp-led film is opening the Cannes Film Festival next week has admitted spitting in the face of a journalist. Maiwenn Le Besco, who simply goes by Maiwenn, has admitted assaulting Edwy Plenel, the founder of investigative news site Mediapart that published a story in which several women accused her ex-husband, the filmmaker Luc Besson, of rape. In an interview with the nightly talk show Quotidien, Maiwenn, 47, was asked if she had assaulted Plenel, to which she responded: “Do I confirm that I assaulted him? (.
. . ) yes.
”“It’s not the time,” she insisted after a moment of silence. “I’ll speak about it when I’m ready. I’m very anxious about the release of my film.
”In a formal complaint, Plenel said he was dining at a restaurant in the 12th arrondissement of Paris in late February when Maiwenn, who was sitting alone at another table, approached him, tilted his head back and spat on his face. Plenel wrote in his complaint that the attack was “damaging on a moral and psychological level” and he was left feeling “very traumatised”. In 2018, Mediapart published several reports based on the accounts of a number of women who accused Besson – Maiwenn’s ex-husband and father of one of her children – of rape and sexual assault.
Last year, French prosecutors dropped a series of rape accusations made against The Big Blue and Nikita director, citing lack of evidence. Maiwenn met Besson when she was just 12-years-old, and the pair later dated before marrying when she was 16 and he was 31. They divorced in 1997 but remain friends and share a daughter.
