Why Oscar dissed Encanto’s ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno” — that “Encanto” earworm that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, becoming only the second No. 1 song ever from a Disney animated film (after “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin” in 1993) — somehow wasn’t even nominated for Best Original Song at the 2022 Academy Awards. And to make matters even stranger, another song from “Encanto” — “Dos Oruguitas,” performed by Sebastian Yatra — was nominated in the category that also includes Billie Eilish’s “No Time to Die” (from “No Time to Die”), Beyoncé’s “Be Alive” (from “King Richard”), Reba McEntire’s “Somehow You Do” (from “Four Good Days”) and Van Morrison’s “Down to Joy” (from “Belfast”).But it’s not Oscar’s fault for overlooking “Bruno.” The song — which, like “Dos Oruguitas,” was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda — was not submitted for nomination by Disney.

Oscars live: Producer promises upbeat, respectful ceremony

Academy Awards says Sunday’s show will strike a balance between being upbeat and fun, while also acknowledging the war in Ukraine.Producer Will Packer says it’s difficult to put on a show while serious world events are unfolding, but he’s also trying to give people a diversion.“In the midst of the revelry and the fun, we will acknowledge it and then we’re going to try to make sure that we give people who are in tough situations there and around the world something to look at, a release, something that’s upbeat and fun,” Packer told The Associated Press ahead of Sunday’s ceremony.Packer also addressed the film academy’s controversial decision to award eight Oscars ahead of the live telecast and weave them into the broadcast.“We’re going to treat all the honorees with an amazing amount of respect. That’s what we do,” Packer said.Dozens of nominees are already on the Oscars red carpet ahead of the ceremony, which begins at 4 p.m.

Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Reba McEntire Among Performers Confirmed For Oscar Show, But No Van Morrison; Expect ‘Bruno’ Production Number

As Deadline broke yesterday, Beyonce has now been officially confirmed to sing in one of the slots of Best Original Song contenders on the 94th Oscars. As noted in the Deadline article speculation is her performance of her nominated song (co-written with DIXSON) called “Be Alive” from King Richard will take place via satellite from a Compton tennis court. That aspect however was not in the Academy’s long awaited announcement of plans for the Best Song presentations. As my colleague Mike Fleming noted the formal announcement would come after voting closed, and indeed it did exactly at 5pm PT which is the same moment ballots had to be in to Pricewaterhouse. The campaign is over. All that is left now is the show itself.
