Andrew McCarthy’s Hulu Docu ‘Brats’ Has Carl Kurlander Thinking Again About The Lingering Smoke From ‘St. Elmo’s Fire:’ Guest Column

Editor’s Note: Journalist David Blum might have forever coined The Brat Pack era, but it was Carl Kurlander who provided the reason the infamous New York article got written. St. Elmo’s Fire was a script Kurlander wrote with director Joel Schumacher, inspired by events in his life. Now an academic, Kurlander has written several guest columns for Deadline including a 35th anniversary remembrance of St. Elmo’s Fire. Why is he tapping again into those memories? He just watched Brats, the Hulu documentary that premiered at Tribeca, directed by and starring Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the St. Elmo’s Fire ensemble that felt maligned by a mag article published the week before the film was released and became a surprise hit. Here, Kurlander supplies some great dish — did you know Demi Moore‘s drug demons almost forced Joel Schumacher to replace her with the young singer Madonna? Or that Georgetown shunned the movie for immoral activity but OK’d The Exorcist because despite the vile goings on involving a possessed child, evil didn’t win? A little of that stuff would have helped McCarthy’s docu, which gets tedious as he attempts to expunge demons, even as cohorts like Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy seem to be humoring him on camera. After all, that film launched fine futures for them, even if the moniker stung. McCarthy paints journo Blum as a villain, but in fairness, The Brat Pack was a far more clever coinage than putting “gate” on the end of every scandal since Watergate. Blum also unwittingly etched into permanent Hollywood history the memory of those actors when they were young and gorgeous. Who wants to be forgotten?

Andra Day is rising up with her first album in nine years — and taking the stage in Central Park for a free show

Andra Day was rising all the way up as a Grammy-nominated chanteuse — for her 2015 debut album, “Cheers to the Fall” — who sang like the spiritual goddaughter of Billie Holiday and Erykah Badu. Then in 2021, the 39-year-old singer — born Cassandra Monique Batie — flipped the script to become the Golden Globe-winning, Oscar-nominated star of “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” the Lee Daniels-directed biopic about the same Lady Day who inspired her stage name. Now, nine years and three movies later — she also shot the indie drama “Exhibiting Forgiveness” and the upcoming supernatural thriller “The Deliverance” — Day is back to bringing her own jazzy, sultry vibes with her long-awaited second studio album, “Cassandra (cherith).”And she will continue to get her own gardenia groove back in the most pastoral of New York settings — Central Park — when she headlines the season kickoff of the SummerStage series with a free concert on Saturday.Still, she hasn’t completely kicked the Holiday habit.“There are some parts for sure that I could still shake and then some parts I’m realizing, well, I’m just growing, you know what I mean?” Day told The Post.

Prince Harry will be ‘destructive’ to William when he becomes King: ‘Another step closer to isolation’

Slingo.Calling Harry a “destructive” person to have close to the Firm, Burrell added that the royals are always guessing as to “what he is going to do next.”Since stepping away from the royal spotlight, Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have built a life of their own in sunny Montecito, Calif.Despite being 5,459 miles from London, the Sussexes have remained close to Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice — a friendship that has reportedly rubbed Kate Middleton the wrong way.According to a royal expert, the Princess of Wales, 42, is reportedly “worried” by the “alliance” the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have formed with Harry and the “Suits” alum.“For William and Kate, an alliance between Harry and Meghan and Beatrice and Eugenie is a huge worry,” royal expert and author Tom Quinn told the Mirror.“Although Harry and Meghan have little sympathy for Prince Andrew, they’ve kept in regular contact with Beatrice and Eugenie, who have always been free of any associations with Meghan’s angry, bitter time in the UK.”“The situation is made worse by the fact that the senior royals’ main asset — Kate herself — is effectively out of action while she continues her treatment for cancer,” he added.Eugenie has even visited the Sussexes in the US, with the pair seen watching the Super Bowl together back in 2022.She was also the only figure from the royal family to make an appearance in his Netflix docuseries “Harry & Meghan.”
