Premiership side St Mirren have pulled the plug on their pursuit of Declan Gallagher and will now turn their focus to another defensive option.
The Buddies had held extensive discussion with the Scotland internationalist’s reps over the past days. St Mirren thought they had agreed a deal in principle for the Aberdeen defender but further complications arose. Aberdeen had already agreed to the move and had given Gallagher permission to open negotiations with St Mirren.
Saints have now decided moved and are now in talks with an English-based central defender. St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson worked closely with Gallagher at Motherwell but he and his board have made the decision to move on. Gallagher also has interest south on the border and it remains to be seen whether that comes off before the close of the window.
The 31-year-old is due to fly to Spain with the Aberdeen squad for their pre-season training camp next week.
Gallagher faces a fight for a starting berth at Pittodrie, as Aberdeen have already signed central defenders Liam Scales, who also plays at left back and Anthony Stewart.
