Midfielder Daniel Phillips felt St Johnstone’s change of shape worked nicely against Rangers - and insisted the improved performance must now be a stepping stone.
Saints’ quest for Scottish Cup glory ultimately ended at the round four stage on Saturday evening after being edged out 1-0 by the visitors from Glasgow.
But the Perth side, setting up in a 4-4-1-1 formation, looked more structured and gave a far better account of themselves compared to previous weeks.
Phillips, a frontrunner for man of the match, told the PA: “I think the change of shape worked very well.

Forward-thinking Melker Hallberg is relishing playing further up the park – and plans to build on his composed finish against Motherwell on Wednesday night.
Coming to her defense. Josh Duhamel had nothing but positive things to say about working with Katherine Heigl.
For better or worse. Danny Masterson and wife Bijou Phillips have stuck together in good times and bad.
After a break for cup action, the Premiership is back with a bang this weekend as Rangers look to eat into Celtic's advantage at the top of the table.
An improved St Johnstone performance was not enough to avoid exiting the Scottish Cup at the fourth round stage.
