Cynthia Littleton Business EditorInvestors are going all-in on the metaverse.That’s the prediction of Carlos Jimenez, managing director of Moelis & Co., who details his view that the entertainment business is in the midst of a massive transformation into a marketplace where entertainment, media, gaming, sports and other activities merge and often take place.“All of these worlds are colliding — it’s the future,” Jimenez, a veteran dealmaker, says on the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business.”  “You’re going to have all these Gen Zers, or whatever the next generation is called, playing an E-sports tournament in the metaverse while listening to a concert inside of it. I think that’s where we’re going to end up.” It may sound futuristic but investment dollars are flowing in, Jimenez said.

Todd Spangler NY Digital EditorLego Group is linking arms with Epic Games, the company behind hit battle-royale game “Fortnite,” to jump into the metaverse — in a way that will be “safe and fun for children and families,” the companies announced.Lego and Epic Games inked a long-term partnership under which they will build an “immersive, creatively inspiring and engaging digital experience” for kids. Details were sparse in the initial announcement; currently, there’s no ETA on when this might launch, what it will look like, or what the monetization model will be.The companies said the new property will give kids tools to become “confident creators… in a safe and positive space.” Lego and Epic Games said they have agreed to three principles for a kid-safe metaverse: Protect children’s “right to play” by making safety and well-being a priority; safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first; and empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

Todd Spangler NY Digital EditorMeta, the company formerly known as Facebook, will not hold the F8 conference for developers in 2022 at all.The move comes after Facebook F8, which the social giant has used to introduce new initiatives, was held virtually in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID pandemic.Meta is “pausing” F8 this year “while we gear up on new initiatives that are all tailored towards the next chapter of the internet, and the next chapter of our company too: building the metaverse,” Diego Duarte Moreira, director of developer and startups programs for Facebook, wrote in a blog post Wednesday. He added, “Similar to the early stages of the web, building the metaverse will be a collaborative effort at every stage – with other companies, creators and developers like you.” Meta is planning to hold its Connect event later this year, where “we’ll share the latest on our VR, AR, and metaverse platform offerings,” according to Moreira.At the 2021 Connect in October, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Meta as the company’s new name, with the mission of “bring[ing] the metaverse to life.” For the full year, Meta reported a loss of $10.2 billion for its Reality Labs segment — encompassing its augmented-reality and VR-related consumer hardware, software and content businesses — on revenue of $2.27 billion.
